Traveling In The Fog
There are many different hazards one can encounter when they are out boating. You must make sure that you are prepared with all your equipment or gear whenever you go out on your boat. You must make sure to check your electronic gadgets like your Raymarine C120 for any defects or malfunctions. Preventing problems from happening should be your main priority. Most often, small things that you do can help prevent major damages or accidents. The following are some things you can apply whenever you are going out boating and fog appears in your area.
When you are boating in the fog, do not forget that objects will seem larger than you think. Your visibility in the fog will immediately drop. In most cases, visibility between 30 and 150 yard objects may appear two times larger than normal. You will think that objects or boats approaching you are traveling faster than their actual speed.
Make sure that you have with you a compass or navigation tools like the Raymarine C120 whenever you are on your boat. When you see a fog bank forming or approaching, do not forget to fix and know your position with your compass or your electronic navigation equipment. This will help prevent you from getting into accidents with other boats or steering in circles.
If the fog bank is too thick to travel in, anchor your vessel in a spot that is too shallow for big vessels to travel in. Make sure you sound your fog horn or bell every 5 seconds when you are set in place with your anchor. And, make sure you post as many lookouts as you can spare to listen for the sounds of approaching boat vessels. Sound your horn with one short blast, followed by a long prolonged blast and another short burst when you hear vessels close by.
Make sure that you have all your of lights turned on in the fog. If you have the money, install an Automatic identification System on your boat (AIS). You must remember to take all the necessary precautions whenever you are out travelling in the fog.
